CFAP Adjustments Pt 1

I’m Bob Larson. In an effort to get apples, potatoes, and other specialty crops included in the USDA’s Coronavirus Food Assistance Program, U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse has joined a bipartisan effort calling on Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue to adjust the requirements …

NEWHOUSE … “Oh, absolutely! And, I was happy to join colleagues from other states, other ag producing states, to point out some of the inequities of the CFAP program in leaving out some important crops, maybe not the big crops in the Midwest, but certainly specialty crops in the Northwest and the Northeast and other parts of the country.”

Newhouse says Northwest specialty crop growers have just as

much right to be helped as do the major commodities …

NEWHOUSE … “Our farmers are experiencing the same negative impacts of the pandemic as all other agricultural products and so we urged the USDA to include apples and certainly potatoes so that they have access to the relief funds that Congress has provided, just like everybody else.”

And that, Newhouse says comes down to leveling the playing field …

NEWHOUSE … “And, I think that that’s fair. We can document the losses. We can provide the proof and the examples that we need that relief in our area just as much as other growers too.”

25 members of Congress, including Newhouse, signed the letter for Purdue urging protection for apple and potato growers.
