It is easy to overlook the role Land Grant Universities play in advancing agriculture techniques and technology. Through research grants and project funding Oregon State University, University of Idaho and Washington State have contributed immensely to the food and fiber industry. In fact researchers at WSU are currently working to develop pint size vegetable plants through genetic modification. These mini-vegies while perfect for homeowners on small lots , could also prove beneficial to third world counties because they don't require as much water and are more resistant to weather. Some of the funding for the WSU Department of Horticulture study actually came from NASA . As astronauts spend longer periods in space, mini plants that produce fresh produce would offer a welcome alternative to freeze-dried foods. In fact this new technology , from one of our own universities just could initiate the greening of space. I'm Susan Allen and this is Food Forethought. Source: Seedques.com January 2006
