Colorado's Commissioner of Agriculture says farmers and ranchers are rightfully leaders in conservation and soil health.

Kate Greenberg tells Colorado Ag Today one of her top priorities is to advance a Soil Health Initiative.

"And that's something we're looking at right now and working with our stakeholders on is what a Soil Health Initiative at the state of Colorado could look like. This is something that has happened. New Mexico's legislature passed a soil health initiative, California. There's task forces that have been created around the country to look at soil health. We are excited about advancing farmer-led work in this area for a number of reasons. Maybe the biggest is it supports farmers' bottom line and helps increase productivity on farms as well as range lands. ..water holding capacity."

Those are especially important following a record breaking winter and snow pack, and a years long drought before that. Greenberg says because the water cycle has become much less predictable, ag producers have to manage lands to deal with both drought and flood. They are working with ranchers, producer young farmers and other stakeholders to find a soil health plan that will work for all of Colorado.
