One of the highlight events of this June's National Home Ownership month was a multi day housing innovation showcase held on the National Mall in Washington D.C.. Among those attending the event was the Secretary of Agriculture.

"We have events across the country similar to this highlights homeownership opportunities available to rural Americans through USDA Rural Development housing program as well."

Some may wonder why an agriculture secretary was at a housing related event.

"At USDA we celebrate each June as National Homeownership Month that highlights homeownership opportunities available to rural Americans through USDA Rural Development housing program as well. All the way back in 1949, President Truman signed the Housing Act. Since then, USDA, single family housing programs have served millions. USDA offers not only guarantee loans but direct loans as well for those who cannot receive credit anywhere else. All the innovations are designed to help people in getting into a home they can afford that's sustainable safe and not only great shelter but all the other benefits."

Among the displays of innovative housing on the National Mall during the showcase, the secretary found... "one company joint Lego land house and another one recycled shipping containers to make strong safe and affordable housing. We've got to think outside the box."
