JOHANNS "As Secretary of Agriculture I don't have the authority to deliver a 40 dollar a barrel of oil to ease the financial burden."
However, US Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns says there are some things that he can do. First, a new site on the USDA web page will help producers calculate energy use and costs. Using the "Energy Estimator" they may be able to reduce some of those costs. For farmers who have to borrow more money to pay for higher fuel and fertilizer costs.
JOHANNS "I am directing our Farm Service Agency to maximize the use of our guaranteed and direct farm loan program to help eligible producers who face credit challenges due to higher energy costs."
Also on the loan front USDA plans to use more rural loan development money to help business and ag producers create new renewable energy systems such as ethanol and biodiesel. Johanns says he's often asked if more federal money will be allocated to help producers offset soaring energy prices.
JOHANNS "I haven't seen that gain much steam. In fact as you know the issue these days has been more along the lines of how to deal with reconciliation."
Johanns has also formed an energy council to look at all USDA programs and to make sure agriculture producers have a place at the table for national energy discussions.
