Ag Water NetWORK Survey

Ag Water NetWORK Survey

According to the Colorado’s State Water plan, the state’s population may double from the current 5.4 million to 10 million people by 2050.The Ag Water NetWORK survey focuses on ag water leasing. If you are an ag water right holder and have yet to participate in the survey, please go to coloradocattle.org and take the 5 to 7 minutes it takes to fill it out. Colorado Cattlemen’s Association Ag Water NETWORK Coordinator Phil Brink says
Brink: “Ag controls about 86 percent of the water in Colorado. As we discuss this issue of ag water leasing at the state level and in the basins, it is imperative that ag water right holders weigh in with their perspectives on this issue of ag water sharing. We need to know what their thoughts, their opinions, their interests and their concerns are — so that approaches to ag water leasing can be tailored to specific interests.”
Brink shares some of the interesting feedback they have received so far
Brink: “One of the interesting takeaways that we asked ag water right holders what type of lease arrangements they would favor. Whether it would be full-season fallowing or split season with a specific cut-off date or simply a reduced delivery volume set at the beginning of the season where the operator then decides how to manage that reduced volume. What we found that the majority of the respondents said we’d preferred the latter —which is reduced delivery volume so we are in the driver seat and we control what we do and how we manage our operation. Which tells us they want to keep things as flexible as possible.”
