National Ag Statistic Service Mountain Region Director Bill Meyer shares details on the numbers from Friday’s USDA Cattle on Feed Report.
Meyer: “At the U.S. level the cattle and calves Cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.8 million head on March 1, 2016. Marketings of fed cattle during February totaled 1.59 million head, 5 percent above 2015.
In Idaho cattle and calves on feed in feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or more was estimated at 240,000 as of March 1st. That inventory was four percent above a year ago, but 2 percent below the previous month. Cattle feeders with 1,000 heard or larger capacity marketed an estimated 41,000 head of fed cattle during February. That was a 19 percent above the month previous and 41 percent higher than marketings one year earlier. The number of cattle that were placed into feedlots of a 1,000 or more head capacity were 38,000 head and that was a 23 percent increase over last year, though a 22 percent decrease of the previous month.
In Washington cattle and calves on feed in feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or more was estimated at 195,000 as of March 1st. That inventory was nine percent below a year ago, but the same level as reported the previous month. The number of cattle that were placed into feedlots of a 1,000 or more head capacity were 38,000 head and that was a 22 percent decrease over last year, though a 3 percent increase of the previous month.
