A Detrimental Proposal

A Detrimental Proposal

Two weeks ago President Obama used the Antiquities Act to lock up a total of 1.8 million acres in California and Utah without any formal review, economic analysis or public comments. In Eastern Oregon, some groups are seeking yet another national monument. This is a move that would be devastating to the ranchers and community of Malheur County says Oregon Cattlemen's Association Executive Director Jerome Rosa.

Rosa: "So there is concern that there will be a 2.5 million acres designation in the Owyhee Canyonlands of Malheur County. This would affect the livelihood of about 40 ranchers in that community. There is some private land in there and it is being discussed on how that would be handled. This would devastate the local economy and our local ranching community and the future of ranching in that area."

A shoe company has been very active in gathering signatures to make the Owyhee Canyonlands a national monument. Keen footwear is promoting a petition called Live Monumental. Interestingly — of the five locations listed on their petition — they have succeeded with the Boulder-White Clouds in Idaho and the recent addition of the Mojave Trails in California.
