Set Sail For San Diego Next Week

Next week ranchers and other beef industry representatives will be in San Diego for the annual Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Trade Show. National Cattlemen's Beef Association Vice President of Government Affairs Colin Woodall

Woodall: "This is the place where every NCBA member has the opportunity to come in and hear about the issues and hear from a myriad of speakers from across the industry and to truly understand what we are dealing with as a industry. More importantly, it is an opportunity to talk about the policy positions of NCBA, to debate those positions and to ultimately to vote on them because the one thing everybody needs to understand is that NCBA is truly a grassroots organization. The policy that we implement here in Washington D.C. comes from our members, is voted on by our members and we don't put actually put it in our policy book until every single member has an opportunity to vote on it.

He continues with more details on some of the optics of the policy committees.

Woodall: "We've got a lot of big issues but I think the one that will lead the discussion in San Diego will be at the Cattle Marketing and International Trade Committee. We will have Terry Duffy who is the Executive Chairman of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange — the CME Group — he is going to discussing high-frequency trading and some of the concerns that we have about market volatility and what role high-frequency trading plays in that particular volatility. I believe that will be a standing-room only discussion."
