Sometimes the darndest things happen. I called Jo Lynne Seufer from the USDA's Risk Management Agency to inquire about a crop insurance deadline and ended up talking blueberries. Listen. I am on my way to the first blueberry meeting that they have ever had east of the Cascades. Blueberries are good for you, is that a good crop? It's a good crop as long as you have acidic soil. Out here they had the haul a whole lot of acidic soil to the Columbia basin that is normal on the coast. Kind of wild. How did they haul get? They hauled it into establish these fields. I'm talking about the farmers themselves. They knew they could grow blueberries in the Columbia basin area and they are growing them. I cannot believe how much they are going. They planted 7000 acres about six years ago. The normal area is in the Willamette Valley and up north of Seattle. They grow wonderfully there and we are ensuring them. Do these blueberry farmers generate a lot of revenue? Yes, they are a high dollar crop.
