U-Pick Blueberries

Blueberry Hills Farms, near Lake Chelan, opened its fields for u-pick on the 13th, and co-owner Kari Sorensen says that their 16 different varieties of blueberries are bigger and better than ever.

SORENSEN: They’re beautiful. We’ve got a great crop on. We’ve got three different fields for a total of 13 1/2 acres. We’re 3 weeks early; it’s been crazy. I mean, it caught us so off guard.

Being a smaller operation Sorensen says they haven’t been affected with the recent H2A visa crisis.

SORENSEN: We’ve got our farm foreman, and he’s got his whole family and a few close friends that pick for us every year, so it’s the same crew. It’s because we don’t have a whole lot of acreage in apples or in blueberries, it’s easier for us to manage.

Bad news - most of their apples got hailed out this year. Good news - they have one property that should be semi-okay.

SORENSEN: We’re not looking forward to making a lot of money on apples this year, but we grow all the golden delicious that we use for our pies here at Blueberry Hills. We sell over 100 whole pies a day in the summer.

But again, as far as blueberries…

SORENSEN: The fruit looks absolutely beautiful this year.
