National Ag Day & Ag Secretary On Avian Influenza

National Ag Day & Ag Secretary On Avian Influenza. I'm Greg Martin with today's Northwest Report.

The Pacific Northwest has had it's share of trouble when it comes to avian influenza. From British Columbia to Oregon and beyond it has caused quarantines and the destructions of whole flocks of birds. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack discussed some of the matters USDA is addressing concerning recent outbreaks of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza and how they are dealing with it.

VILSACK: We are going to go through the resources that are budgeted for that and if necessary if we need additional resources we have the CCC we can trigger.

Exports of course have been impacted when it comes to poultry and Vilsack says they are working to mitigate that.

Today is National Ag Day. If you eat then agriculture should matter to you. Ag Day is a part of National Ag Week and is a day to recognize and celebrate the abundance provided by agriculture. Every year, producers, ag associations, corporations, universities, government agencies and countless others across America join together to recognize the contributions of ag. Check out the National Ag Day website, agday.org, to find an event near you.
