Grain Bin Safety Week
Organized by Nationwide, Grain Bin Safety Week (Feb 22 – 28, 2015) is an annual observance dedicated to increasing the awareness of grain bin safety on farms and commercial grain-handling facilities. CHS Insurance is a partner in this week’s focus on Grain Bin Safety. Michele Tibodeau, CHS Enterprise Marketing and Communications, says the most important thing to remember about fatalities of grain engulfment.
Tibodeau: “The deaths that results from grain engulfment are really preventable deaths. So what what can we do to help raise awareness around the steps that should be taken to avoid entering into the bin and getting into the situation.”
She continues with a critical piece of avoiding entering the bin in the first place.
Tibodeau: “Well a lot of it is around just grain management and being able to have your grain at the right temperature and at the right moisture level inside the bin so you don’t have issues where the grain crusting on the side of the bin. Which often leads people to get in there and try and knock it down the sides themselves. Or get in there with the auger moving and that creates another point of danger for anyone entering the grain bin. So first and foremost I would say grain management in general.”
