Getting Top Dollar For Your Beef

Getting Top Dollar For Your Beef. I'm Greg Martin with Colorado Ag Today.

While the cattle industry has seen some declines in recent months, Tom Brink, cattle producer and president of Top Dollar Angus feels there is still a place for top quality Angus beef.

BRINK: I think the neat thing about where we are in our industry right now is producers do understand what verification programs look like. Many of them have been involved in age and source verification for example when that was going fast and furious here a few years back and that was a good program and there was a premium involved with that.

He says a lot of cattle producers have had experience with certification programs and he adds that his Top Dollar Angus program is similar in some ways.

BRINK: But what we do is genetic certification so we actually require objective information that will tell us where the cattle fall genetically and if they do have a couple of generations of the Angus backing in their background along with the top 25% of the breed bellcurve then those cattle are going to qualify into the program and then they can be sold under our brand name.

Brink says that a lot of people view cattle as just cattle and that's not the case.

BRINK: We've got to have some mechanism to differentiate the best from the rest and Top Dollar Angus is one way to do that. You can almost think of it like Certified Angus Beef for feeder cattle. Certified Angus Beef went into the cooler with a set of specs, they branded that meat and sold it into the marketplace for a premium and we're essentially doing the same thing with Top Dollar Angus at the feeder cattle level of the market.

And that's Colorado Ag Today. I'm Greg Martin, thanks for listening on the Ag Information Network of the West.
