USPB Aids Typhoon Haiyan Victims

When Typhoon Haiyan devastated the central region of the Philippines last November, more than 13 percent of the country’s population was affected — 12.9 million people. There were 1.9 million people left homeless and 2.5 million people were in need of food. The United States Potato Board was able to assist in immediate relief to those in need by having U.S. dehy potatoes available to food aid organizations.
USPB International Marketing Manager TK Kuwahara says that they worked with the Monarch Foundation in feeding more than 3,000 victims hot meals using U.S. dehy potatoes
Kuwahara: “They were able to see the benefits of using dehy in a emergency situation because it was easy to prepare. They only needed potable water to make the mashed potatoes and then that could be used as an ingredient with other things they had. Dehydrated potatoes or mashed potatoes were easily mixed with the local ingredients and it was a great hit.”
She shares this update
Kuwahara: “Overall with our food aid program, there has been 13,000 metric tons of dehydrated potatoes purchased valued at $16 million since that start of the program.”
