Congressman King's Farm Bill Amendment

Congressman King's Farm Bill Amendment

Iowa's Congressman Steve King is a House Farm Bill Conferee and has an amendment to the Farm Bill that he says all of animal agriculture should support. He shares more details about the amendment.

King: "It clarifies and restores the commerce clause of the Constitution says that the states cannot regulate the manufacture or means of production of agriculture products that are listed in current law. It's that simple. California is the lead state in trying to regulate other states. They've done it with other commodities and lost in court. So I'll say that California is free to regulate California producers -- to over regulate them -- but no state has the authority to regulate the other 49 states."

He is referring the California referendum that doubled the cage size for laying hens in that state as well as banning the sale of eggs not produced under these standards. Congressman King says this that the Humane Society of the United States was a big force behind this change and that they have an ulterior motive.

King: "The HSUS they are the vegan lobby and their agenda is -- and everybody needs to understand it-- their agenda is to take animal products out of our diet."

Some opponents have said that the amendment may put animals' welfare in jeopardy and Congressman King addresses that rumor.

King: "There is no basis and truth to the allegation that it may undermine animal health. It does not and it does not affect it in anyway."
