5-30 IAN High Desert

A visit to a high Desert Museum. Ranching in Oregon explores this industry’s history in the state, from the arrival of cattle in the late 1700’s to important ranching issues in the High Desert today. Featured now in our Collins Gallery, Historic Perspective focuses on early ranching and how it became a major industry in the 1800’s.  Here is High Desert Museum spokesperson, John Fugurson: “We have a ranching exhibit and it is called Ranching in Oregon Historic Perspective: Contemporary Issues. The exhibit explores how ranchers these days are looking for innovative ways for cattle and people and the land to function together in economically feasible ways. Also environmentally sound ways. It’s really the story of how we get beef to the market and how beef gets to the dinner table. Have you had lots of interest? Yes. There are always people standing there, it is right in the main entrance conveniently located in front of the gift shop. Then are you selling stakes in the gift shop? ( Laughter) No, we don’t even serve them in the dining hall, but I will bring that up for the next time.
