Centennial Celebration Continues

I’m Lacy Gray with Washington Ag Today.

2013 is the Washington State Department of Agriculture’s 100th anniversary, and the agency has been busy since the first of the year celebrating that milestone and sharing information about WSDA programs and services and the state’s thriving agriculture industry with Washington residents. Last month the WSDA held a highly attended and successful Centennial Day at the Capitol. Since February Washington students in 4th through 12th grade have been working on their posters for the WSDA’s “Future of Agriculture in Washington” poster contest and should have their entries in by May 15th. The winner will be announced June 10th. Becky Elias with the WSDA talks about what else is happening in June with the Department.

ELIAS: The actual birthday celebration of the Department is on June 10th, and for the whole month we are partnering with the Washington State Dairy Products Commission and also with Fred Meyer to do awareness about emergency food and food assistance programs. And those two groups are going to be coordinating a big food drive event throughout the state at different Fred Meyer locations that the Dairy Products Commission has been assisting with.

Elias says that the WSDA is planning to also do an event on June 10th to highlight the role of agriculture in the state and the support it provides the hunger relief community. For event locations or more information about the WSDA’s Centennial events calendar contact centennial@agr.wa.gov.
