Cattle Barons Scholarships

Cattle Barons Scholarships

Welcome to Open Range, I’m KayDee Gilkey. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.

I’m Greg Martin with today’s AgriBeef Minute. The Pendleton Cattle Baron’s weekend is this weekend filled with all kinds of events for the whole family. According to co-organizer Pat Beard one of the key parts of the event is the scholarship program.

BEARD: High school seniors and we include college as well that are going to continue in agricultural pursuits. The application form is online at CattleBarons.net and we select anywhere from two to six recipients each year and the scholarships are from $1500 to $2500 each.

Beard discusses what they are looking for in the applicants.

BEARD: We always look for kids that are involved in Cattle Barons. There are local young people whether it’s from high schools or community colleges in the area that come and support the event. Also volunteer their time there, those people are always given a priority. But it’s kids that are committed to the western way of life that are going into some sort of agricultural endeavor whether it’s range management or crop production. Bottom line is that we’re helping the next generation stay involved in agriculture.

Net proceeds from Cattle Barons weekend fund the scholarships and applications are due by this weekend. More details at CattleBarons.net

I’m Greg Martin and that’s today’s AgriBeef Minute.
