5-2 SS AKC Training
You may remember last week I did a couple of stories on a very unlikely English setter named Lou who has captured the AKC Master title. Quite an accomplishment for a dog that was considered not the pick of the litter, but the runt of the litter. Owner Wade Kisner knew he had a good dog despite its status in the litter, but he turned the training over to professional dog trainer Anthony Clinton. Here he is: “There are three different categories in the AKC hunt test in general, there is the junior level, a senior-level and a master level, Master level being the highest and junior level being an introduction to the whole hunting test scenario. we got Lou to the Masters so we are going to focus on the Masters level. Basically it is a 30 minute test where two judges on horses will follow me around and critique my performance but mostly Lou’s performance and how he operates through the bird field. We are going to go around the field for one half hour and Lou is going to have to be hunting hard back and forth and hopefully he comes across a bird. Primarily quail are used. He has to point that bird and stay on point, not moving, until I find the bird myself, I flush the bird and I will have two designated gunners by my side and I will have them shoot the bird all while Lou stands on point.” There is a lot more to it and we will talk about that tomorrow.
