Business of Feeding the World & Pasture To Palate

I’m Lacy Gray with Washington Ag Today.

This summer high school students will have an opportunity to learn the ins and outs of running their own company farm while helping to feed the world, and still managing to make a profit. The Washington State Potato Commission is partnering with Washington Business Week, the Washington Grain Commission and several other ag businesses to create Agri-Business Week. For the week of July 21 through the 27th students will live on the Central Washington University campus, partaking in hands-on activities that fully explore the ag industry, all while learning about agriculture careers from professionals within the ag industry. For more information visit www.wbw.org.

On May 6th Heron Pond Farms will be host to the 4th Tilth Producers of Washington and WSU Small Farms Program Farm Walk entitled “From Pasture To Palate”. Heron Pond Farms is a small, family owned sustainable farm located at the base of Tower Mountain near Spokane that raises hormone free dairy goats and large black hogs, and provides artisan cheeses and heritage pork to local markets, restaurants and individual consumers. Jackie Cramer with the Tilth Producers of Washington gives a brief description of the farm walk.

CRAMER: It will be a tour of the farm and the dairy on how to do Grade-A cheese production and how they treat and raise their animals.

Farmer Lorie Arnold will be on hand for the farm walk and will show what goes into creating and operating a Grade-A dairy, starting in the milking room and ending at the cheese cave where attendees will have the opportunity to sample cheeses produced at Heron Pond Farms. For more information or to register for the farm walk visit tilthproducers.org.
