Junior Award Winner & Orcharding Workshop

As a Wilbur high school senior JD Rosman is busy doing what high school seniors do, but on top of all that he is an ambassador for the Washington Association of Wheat Growers, and most recently, as an active member of the National Junior Angus Association and Washington Junior Angus Association, JD has earned the NJAA’s Bronze and Silver awards. Junior Angus breeders must apply for the awards, then meet point requirements in many areas of participation before receiving the honors. Rosman talks about the eligibility requirements.

ROSMAN: They take into consideration how you did at shows, also leadership opportunities, leadership roles, conferences that you went to, national shows - how many calves you’ve registered, how many you’ve sold. All of that is taken into account - basically your whole angus project.

Rosman shares hopes for future possibilities.

ROSMAN: I look forward to filling out my gold (award application) and possibly getting that award when I’m 21. Currently I am the vice president of the Washington Junior Angus Association. I hope to run for a regional junior angus office later this summer. That has been a great experience in itself - just to be able to get involved in that organization as well.

Establishing orchards and growing healthy tree fruit will be topics of discussion during an all day workshop April 6 at WSU Thurston County Extension in Olympia. Other topics to be covered include thinning and pruning techniques, irrigation system setup, and harvest methods.Workshop participants will be able to learn about rootstock and cultivar selection, orchard layout development, integrated pest management, and soil fertility management. Cost of the workshop is $70 and includes lunch.
