1-7 IAN $7 Gal.
Last week on the precipice of falling off the fiscal cliff, CNN published an article that said the New Year could push milk prices to $7 a gallon. The notion was that Congress was spending all its time trying to avert the fiscal cliff and as a result many other legislative matters were being ignored. One of them was the agriculture bill which CNN’s article contended could lead to a doubling of the price of milk early this year it not addressed. Needless to say that raised my eyebrows so I called Bob Naerbout, executive director of the Idaho Dairymen's Association: ” 1st it is not conceivable and it is disappointing that not your kind of media you but other types of media have blown this to the extent that they have. Not only does this make consumers service but it also does not provide the dairy industry an opportunity to plan on what they are doing for example as a dairyman, when there is confusion is my price going to be what it is today at $18 a hundredweight or is it going to go up or is it going to go down? Creates a lot of insecurity in knowledge. And it creates a lot of consumer concern that is not warranted.” Well the fiscal cliff may have been avoided in the 11th hour but we still don’t know about the farm bill and milk prices.
