 Extremely smart fish.

The last couple of days we followed a fly fisherman at Silver Creek near Sun Valley and this was his 1st ever adventure. He was wearing a T-shirt, jeans, tennis shoes and a fly rod that he had just bought and had to be rigged up by the staff at the fly shop. He ended up getting a great rainbow after falling in floundering around in the water to the delight of a group of seasoned fly fishing aficionados who were watching. Dave Faltings, an outfitter from Silver Creek Outfitters, tells us that the fish at Silver Creek are pretty sophisticated. “Silver Creek is a very hard place to fish because the fish are very educated, the water is very clear, it moves slowly, the fish can see things very well, and the fly selection down on a spring fed Creek like that is pretty small, so that also makes it tough.  The flow is very slow so they get to inspect things very carefully and they also see a lot of fishermen down there so the fishing seems to be more educated down there. It is hired or. It is kind of like Henry’s Fork. So you would say it’s kind of master’s school down at Silver Creek whereas the Big Wood River and the Copper Basin and some of our other streams like the Freestone River, the fish can’t inspect the flies as well as a can at Silver Creek, they have to eat a little bit quicker because the food is moving faster in the water so it is a little easier fishing. More and bigger flies, you can use a standard fly at the Big Wood and  all these other rivers whereas the Silver Creek is very specialized.” That is what makes the story about the novice fisherman so special.
