6-19 SS Silver Creek 2
Yesterday we heard the story of novice east coast fly fisherman, Terry Henneghan fishing Silver Creek for the 1st time in his life. He was flopping in the water after falling, and several accomplished fly fisherman and float tubes were laughing at him. Here is where human resolve comes in. “I got up and waded across this little island and sat down on top of it to dry off a little bit. Took my shirt off and running it out, the leader was already on, I had Scott tired on at the store, and then I tried to tie on my fly. Well I didn’t know what to put on but I started looking at the water and I saw yellow looking sailboats with white wings so I looked in my little box and I found a yellow looking sailboat with white wings and I tied that on to the end of the leader. My 1st cast got stuck in the bushes and snapped off. The leader got all tangled up and I couldn’t untangle it so I tied another yellow sailboat on and on my 2nd or 3rd cast it drifted down and this nose came up and the fly disappeared and I set the hook and the fish buried itself in the weeds. It was a big fish and I decided I was going to get that fish. I walked into the water and I got downstream from the fish and I backed the fish out, the fish took off and we had a little bit of a battle for a bit and he got in the weeds again and the 2nd time I got there I looked down in the weeds and I could see his tail and I just went right down there and grabbed that tail and I pulled him out and I was holding that fish up in the air and I was so proud of myself because it was a 17 or 18 inch rainbow.” Tomorrow we learn why that was such a huge accomplishment.
