2-29 IAN Chinese Shrimp

Shrimp scampi… famous as an Italian entrée, loaded with butter, seasoning, garlic,…and maybe something else…something you don’t like.

Aquaculturist Chip Holmes is raising some serious questions about how closely the USDA monitors imported fish. Among the question marks is shrimp. We know the Chinese use lots of chemicals in their fish products and that includes shrimp.  “It is a serious issue and I hope the USDA will finally put their foot down and say no America deserves better than this. Would that also, Chip, spill over into the shrimp that is brought into this country? I wouldn’t be so prized. I don’t keep up with the shrimp industry that much but certainly from so many of the Asian countries that do raise shrimp, and we have had problems with so many of the imports using chemicals to clean bacteria off of the product, that we farmers in America are not allowed to use. If it’s against the law for us to use them, then certainly the product that is brought in certainly should not be allowed to use that product or chemical that we are not allowed to use. So I would say yes.”
