The Power of Protein

Welcome to Open Range, I’m Susan Allen. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.

I’m Greg Martin with today’s AgriBeef Minute. February is Heart Month and in support of a healthy heart Traci Bracco, Executive Director of the Idaho Beef Council says to check out beef.

BRACCO: Beef is involved in Heart Month for a number of reasons. One, because it’s a premiere protein, it’s very nutritious in addition to being delicious but also there’s a big misperception out there that eating beef increases your risk for heart disease and one of the reasons that we get involved in Heart Month is to break down that myth and misperceptions.

Bracco says there is plenty of evidence that shows as part of a healthy diet, beef improves your heart by lowering cholesterol levels.

BRACCO: The great thing is there’s 29 lean cuts of beef. Some of the favorites like t-bones, filet mignon, tenderloin, sirloin, tri-tips, 95% lean ground beef all meet the government guidelines for lean so many people are actually surprised what they’re buying at the grocery store is lean. Over 60% of what is sold at the grocery store meets the guidelines.

If you have questions about how to choose the right cut of beef, Bracco says to just ask.

BRACCO: People are welcome to visit the Idaho Beef Council website which is idbeef.org and then another great resource for them is beefitswhatsfordinner.com. There’s hundreds of recipes as well as a lot of nutrition information about beef, how to choose the right beef for your cooking occasion.

I’m Greg Martin and that’s today’s AgriBeef Minute.

Thanks Greg. Don’t forget Greg will be back each Wednesday with the AgriBeef Minute. Agri Beef Co - Real Families, Great People, Exceptional Beef. I’m Susan Allen.
