Steer-A-Year

Welcome to Open Range, I’m Susan Allen. Stay tuned because after the break I’ll check in with our field reporter, Greg Martin for the AgriBeef Minute.

I’m Greg Martin with today’s AgriBeef Minute. There are a lot of good ag programs at various colleges around the country but one in particular is getting a lot of attention. Jim Males, with Oregon State University talks about the Steer-A-Year course.

MALES: The Steer-A-Year program was started just about 20 years ago and it was started to have a hands on learning experience for students but also to have a cooperative program with the Oregon Cattlemen. The Oregon Cattlemen donate calves at weaning or in the fall.

The students are responsible for all aspects of raising the calves and even through processing of the meat. Males says they have a good number every year.

MALES: We’re now running pretty consistently around 25 and we have about 25 or 30 students that are participating pretty much now through the school year.

He says the funds from beef sales go back into the program.

MALES: When the program started originally the funds were split between the department, the cattlemen and women in the state. Now the funds are all staying here within the department. Students really look forward to it. We have students that are staying in it for 3 or 4 years of their college career and we have a lot of interest in students wanting to get into it.

I’m Greg Martin and that’s today’s AgriBeef Minute.

Thanks Greg. Don’t forget Greg will be back each Wednesday with the AgriBeef Minute. Agri Beef Co - Real Families, Great People, Exceptional Beef. I’m Susan Allen.
