03/08/05 Governor`s Award Winner, McNabb

John McNabb has good reason to want to keep his precious topsoil right where it is, on his Inkom farm. MCNABB "When we lose soil we get rocks." McNabb received a Governor's award for his environmental stewardship. No-till farming which he and his three sons employ has a lot to do with it. MCNABB "People plow, chisel, disk, they'll do everything in the world. Well they plow it up loose and the next thing they do is working it down to get that hard surface again they already had before they started. See all this rubbish we've seeded into protects that moisture at the top there. It really makes it good and you can see the old roots in there, the organic matter. We've raised the organic matter on our ground a point and a half, two points, which is quite a thing in this part of the country, this part of Idaho. Probably the best crop that I've had has been these three boys working together and being on a tough situation. If you had it real easy and made a lot of money you might fight with each other but we don't have that problem because we don't have anything to fight about."
