And The Dark Horse Wins!
Ever wanted to call an elected official a Turkey ? Well that wouldn’t have raised an eyebrow in Corrales New Mexico. I’m Susan Allen with today’s Open Range, stay tune for the story. Election season'S in full swing, all the promises and hot air, so in a refreshing take on the campaign process Corrales, New Mexico ran an election for a “pet” mayor. For over a month locals voted for their favorite feathered or furry friend each whom like certain candidates I know attempted to buy votes, no not $17,000 a plate Hollywood galas, more in the style of cluck for a buck, a dollar a vote as a fundraiser for the Kiwanis Foundation of Corrales. The debates were as colorful as the Republicans with Buddy the Dalmatian barking at Paco Peco the llama, while Sherman the Gray Quarter Horse nipped at Aspen the black grade mare for her crowd appealing nickers. At one point Emma the Donkey pinned her big ears at Little Miss the chicken for inferring she was an ass. When the votes were counted the dark horse won. Apparently Aspen garnered nearly all the younger votes by her free kisses and horseback rides. According to my sources at the Horse .com “When (human) Mayor Phillip Gasteyer announced the mare as the winner, she let out a shrill whinny, possibly denouncing any new taxes.” The event raised $7,800 towards the charity and Paco Peco the Llama is demanding a recount.
