Walla Walla grower chairs Washington Grain Commission
Washington Ag Today February 9, 2010 The Washington Grain Commission, which represents wheat and barley growers in the state in deciding how their assessment funds are spent, elected a new chairman at its January meeting. It is Nat Webb, a Walla Walla area grower. Webb says he hopes he can do as well as his predecessors have. He mentions one significant issue he says the commission and growers generally are facing. Webb: “One item is the wheats that are being produced by businesses and how that will be incorporated into or how the universities will incorporate their varieties, how both of them will be incorporated together. That is probably one of the more pressing items.” As chairman Webb will draw up a budget for the commission’s next fiscal based on revenues collected in the current fiscal year and the outlook for that has brightened. Webb: “About the time summer came everybody was anticipating a very low price and that changed dramatically and this year at this point looks just the opposite and hopefully we can do a real accurate job of forecasting the revenue so we can anticipate how to spend it and hopefully we can spend it in such as manner that it benefits the producers.” The Washington Grain Commission funds research, marketing and grower information programs with revenue from assessments on grower sales of what and barley.
