Getting Down and Dirty with Immigration. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.
Immigration. It is becoming one of those things that legends are made of. Congress talks about it, the President talks about it but in the end, no one really does anything about it. Tamar Jacoby, President of Immigration Works USA says they are trying to get something going.
JACOBY: We're a federation of employers from across the country working for immigration reform and its all different types of employers from growers to high tech, to restaurants to construction and we have coalitions in 25 states.
They are planning a one-day conference and strategic planning session for employers who rely on immigrant workers.
JACOBY: Folks are coming from a variety of states, as far away as New York and New Mexico but most will be from the northwest tri-state area, Idaho, Oregon and Washington who would like to see our immigration laws changed so that the workers they need to grow their businesses and stay in business and to be competitive can come here legally.
We are hearing that Congress will probably not attempt any kind of immigration reform again this year.
JACOBY: It probably will not happen this year, I agree with them. I don't think anything much is going to happen between now and November but I think this is the kind of battle you gear up for; it doesn't happen in a day.
The conference is scheduled for Thursday, August 12 at the Sheraton, Seattle. More tomorrow.
