Americans Doing Farm Labor

Americans Doing Farm Labor

The picture, the demographic of people who are willing to do farmwork may be changing…as in like back in the good old days. I don’t have to tell you how tough things are out there. Every time you look at a headline in the paper, turn on the radio or TV, talk to a friend or neighbor, you hear about the tough times we’re going through. Lots of people out of work. Thousands looking for jobs. For years we’ve been collectively and bitterly complaining about illegal immigrants invading the country. The counter argument has been that these folks are willing to do jobs that Americans refuse to do. Well I had a chance to sit down with Governor Otter the other day and asked him if he thought Americans were willing to go to work doing farm labor?

“No question about it. When we were at 2.7% unemployment, it wasn’t that hard for a person to find a job if they wanted a job, switch jobs, start a new career, whatever they wanted to do David, but today when you’ve got 66,900 people out of work, they’re gonna take those jobs where they’re working on a potato digger or a beet combine or something else.”

Americans doing American labor. What a thought.
