Summer Rose'

Welcome to Vine to Wine this is your host Linda Moran. Yesterday we discussed great summer white wines. Now today we are moving on to as discussion of Rose’ wines.

For the past several years, Rose’ wines as a category have been growing. They are far from the sticky white zinfandel of the past.  And I think winemakers are enjoying creating them in much drier styles and from a variety of different grapes. The wines are delicious slightly chilled and have much more flavor than you may at first imagine. This makes them a perfect candidate for summer sipping and outdoor dining. Rose’ wines are made from red grapes. The color of red wines is derived from the pigment in the skins. If we squeeze a red grape the juice is usually white. In order to make the juice red it is left in contact with the skins. In the case of Rose’ wine, the juice is left in contact with the skin for only a brief period of time making the resulting wines a bit paler red.

The resulting wines are hearty enough to accompany grilled meats and poultry, as well as seafood. The variety of grape will obviously influence the final product the most. So think about trying several different wines made from Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Grenache and many more. Tasting them side by side is entertaining as well as educational and a great conversation piece while clustering around the grill watching dinner cook. Remember to send your wine questions to Linda at vine to wine dot net and thanks for joining me on today’s Vine to Wine.
