New E.coli Vaccine

New E.coli Vaccine

The cattle industry has received a new tool that will enhance its efforts to control a serious bacterial disease that can effect humans. I'm Jeff Keane; I'll be right back with this important information.A new vaccine has been developed by Epitopix corporation to reduce the prevalence of the E.coli 0157 carrier state and for reduction in the amount of the E.coli 0157 shed in feces to minimize E.coli exposure and infection of herd mates. While the bacteria that can exist in the gastrointestinal tract of outwardly healthy cattle does not cause disease in cattle, it can cause serious problems for humans if meat tainted with the pathogen is not cooked properly. Three Epitopix scientists, Dr. Daryll Emery, Darren Straub, and Doug Burkhardt led a team to actually develop the vaccine, while beef experts, Dr. Dan Thomsen of Kansas State University and Dr. Guy Loneragan of West Texas A&M University designed and carried out clinical trials and large feedlot efficacy studies to meet USDA requirements. E.coli 0157, Bacterial Extract was issued a conditional license by USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service under a special circumstance situation since there is no other vaccine available to help with the E.coli 0157 problem. The vaccine will, of course, be tested more extensively. This could be a giant step controlling E.coli problems coming from beef, but remember to cook and store beef products properly. I'm Jeff Keane.
