A love, hate relationship. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.
I admit this might be a bit of a stretch for my usual Fruit Grower listeners but bear with me as we discuss the love/hate relationship with the fruitcake. I sat down and started doing some research into this holiday tradition. Even though yesterday was Christmas, some fruitcake will still be around, in some cases for years to come. My British grandmother had a distinct fondness for brandy soaked aged fruitcake. After she passed away my wife and I decided to make one in her honor. I think a new puppy is less work. And quite honestly, I never have been much for fruitcake myself although Granny's brandy soaked fruitcake was not too bad thanks to a liberal hand with the brandy. But there are those that covet the fruitcake. A quick look on the internet yields headings like: "No Really, A Good Fruitcake," "That Infamous Fruitcake" or "In Defense of the Fruitcake." I will admit that it has been a number of years since I have had a slice of fruitcake and as I get older my palate has changed&yes, I do like brussell sprouts now&so maybe it's time to give the venerable fruitcake one more try. As long as it's laden with fruit from our very own northwest fruitgrowers.
That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
