11/21/07 UN to Pay Farmers

Yes we are going to trust that the UN will be fair in implanting their latest wild idea, one where they want to pay all the world's farmers to protect the environment& after all we saw who benefited from the Oil for Food fiasco. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization feels certain that paying farmers through PES, ( payment for environmental services) will help to conquer what they call two of humanities greatest challenges; beating poverty and safeguarding the environment. They see this new program very much like a subsidy, where farmers will receive payments based on how they participate or perform in three particular arenas the UN calls "services": The storage of carbon dioxide in plants and soil, (which the UN feels certain could slow global warming,) water stewardship and nature conservation. Before you chuckle at this latest UN endeavor remember that the Conservation Reserve Program or CRP where our NW farmers were paid not to grow crops was actually one of the first of the UN's grand payments schemes.
