10/22/07 Food Police Foiled

Like the froth on a cappuccino a voice of sanity rises to the top of the ongoing food debate. Apparently California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger refused to be bullied by the food police who were attempting in the words of Consumer Freedom to "turn menu boards into nutritional laundry lists." Calling new legislation impractical Governor Schwarzenegger also pointed out an unfair bias in legislation heavily lobbied by the pro vegetarian group Center for Science in the Public Interest. If law this act could have cost some California restaurants thirty thousand dollars or more while others wouldn't incur any expense at all. Governor Schwarzenegger pointed what we all should inherently know, that restaurants offer consumers a variety of food choices, and the consumer decides. Many restaurants today are fabulous at providing nutritional information when requested and even when not in the form of tray liners, table toppers and web sites. Thankfully California has led the way and opted out of government-ordered warning labels on menus.
