Marching for Immigration. I'm Greg Martin with today's Fruit Grower Report.
May Day has become the Day of National Unity. In a way it's fitting with the old tradition of May Day and May baskets by giving a token of caring in the form of flowers and candy. Now though it's about raising awareness for immigrant rights in the United States. Matt Adams is the Interim Director for Northwest Immigrant Rights Project whose primary job is legal services.
ADAMS: We are a legal services organization that provides direct representation to the low income immigrant community. If they can't afford a private attorney, then they don't necessarily have a right to an attorney, we are an organization trying to service many of those individuals who can't retain an attorney.
They are spearheading the northwest's Day of National Unity marches in select cities.
ADAMS: So there is a whole bunch of different organizations that have come together to help organize and support it and so you'll have organizations like ourselves that are specifically focused on immigrant rights, you'll have other organizations like unions who are out there working with labor issues, you're going to have housing and children's rights organizations a lot of other people coming together in alliance that are showing there support and so there's going to be a fairly broad spectrum.
Larger marches are planned in California and in bigger cities across the U.S.
That's today's Fruit Grower Report. I'm Greg Martin on the Northwest Ag Information Network.
