New Report Quantifies California's Nut Industry Impact
A new report is putting numbers behind the economic impact of California's nut industry.The Peanut and Tree Nut Processors Association has released its first-ever economic impact report, titled "Nut Numbers: The Economic Impact of the Nut Industry." According to the study, California's nut sector generates nearly $21.9 billion in direct economic impact, supports more than 94,800 direct jobs, and accounts for more than $9.2 billion in direct wages.
Nationally, the report finds the U.S. nut industry contributes more than $148 billion to the economy each year and supports more than half a million jobs.
The industry also plays a major role in trade and tax revenue, contributing $15.7 billion in taxes and supporting nearly $10.7 billion in annual exports.
Demand for nuts comes from a wide range of food manufacturers, including candy, bakery, ice cream, and dough mix companies.
