Peanuts Take Center Stage in D.C.
Peanut industry leaders are taking their concerns straight to Washington as economic pressures continue to mount across the Southeast.Representatives from the United States Peanut Federation recently met with members of Congress, Senate leaders, and agricultural officials in Washington, D.C. to discuss trade, nutrition, and the current financial outlook for peanut producers. A major focus was the newly approved Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026, also known as Farm Bill 2.0, which builds on provisions from earlier legislation.
During those meetings, industry leaders emphasized rising production costs and projected financial losses for the 2026 crop year, calling current conditions unsustainable for many Southeast farms. While assistance from the 2026 Farmer Bridge Assistance program has helped, leaders say a significant funding gap remains.
“Peanut producers are struggling during these challenging economic times and are in urgent need of support,” said Taylor Arnold, executive director of the Georgia Peanut Commission.
Industry groups say they will continue working with Congress and USDA to secure additional support and strengthen the future of the U.S. peanut industry.
