Farm Bill and Specialty Crops
From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. The need for disaster aid in agriculture is not in question this year, but a more efficient and effective system of distribution could be a difference maker for many farmers.Kam Quarles, CEO of the National Potato Council, says it’s
desperately needed and should be part of the new farm bill …
QUARLES … “It’s a real necessary step, just beyond specialty crops, it’s the essential first step in finally getting a new farm bill reauthorized.”
Like the farm bill, Quarles says that passed out of the House Ag Committee …
QUARLES … “Chairman Thompson, in his farm bill, he has a provision that speaks directly to this economic relief issue and encourages the Trump administration to use a program that they delivered in the past that worked very well for specialty crops.”
Bottom line, Quarles says it’s a proven plan …
QUARLES … “Chairman Thompson is effectively saying, we know what works and let’s double-down on that. Don’t reinvent the wheel. And that is the appropriate mechanism for specialty crops.”
But Quarles says there’s more to the new farm bill than that …
QUARLES … “That was amongst a number of things that they’re doing very well in this farm bill proposal. That is one of them and it’s really, really important because we’re going to face another one of these economic crises in the future. There’s no doubt about it.”
Again, that’s Kam Quarles, CEO of the National Potato Council.
