If you’re a veterinarian or finishing veterinary school, there’s an opportunity worth noting for those interested in serving rural communities that depend on livestock care.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture is now accepting applications for the 2026 Georgia Veterinary Education Loan Repayment Program, or GVELRP. Eligible veterinarians have until Wednesday, October 15th, 2025, to apply.

This program offers student loan repayment assistance to licensed veterinarians who commit to practicing in designated rural areas of Georgia and providing veterinary care for food animals where those services are in short supply.

Commissioner Tyler J. Harper explains, “The GVELRP plays a crucial role in addressing the shortage of rural veterinarians in our state. Now more than ever, our rural communities need access to high-quality veterinary services that support farmers, ranchers, and rural pet owners.”

Applicants must live in Georgia, be U.S. citizens or lawfully present, and agree to work in a board-approved rural county with a population of 50,000 or less.
