Newhouse on Tariffs

From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. When the subject of tariffs comes up in agricultural circles, you hear the good and the bad, from successful trade deals to the rising costs for farmers and consumers.

But on the heels of or in the midst of harvest season, U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse says when you ask is key …

NEWHOUSE … “I think I could characterize the feeling here in D.C. as very similar to the feeling that I’m hearing back home. People are getting anxious. You know, time is not our friend. Things are being harvested and need market access in order to sell. And, you know, people are very, have been very patient and willing to give the President as much runway as possible to get trade deals done with many of our important trading partners.”

So, sooner rather than later? …

NEWHOUSE … “Like I said, we don’t have the convenience or the luxury of time. We’ve got to get these things done as quickly as possible.”

But there have been some positives from tariffs …

NEWHOUSE … “You’re right, some countries have come forward. We’ve got a lot of good trade deals done with several important countries. Just today, as a matter of fact, the President has a meeting by phone with Chairman Xi from China. So that’s a, as you know, a very critical market for many of the crops that we raise in the United States.”

Newhouse believes the President gets it, as does Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, but still, the deals need to get done as soon as possible.
