From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. Northwest cherry harvest is well underway, and the reports so far, are looking great for both volume and quality.

And at this point, Northwest Cherries’ Director of Domestic Promotions, Karley Lange says harvest could also run longer than usual …

LANGE … “Last season, we had a shorter crop on the back end just due to the freeze that we saw back last January. It froze out a lot of the trees in the higher elevations. But all that fruit has come back this season, so I think we’re going to see it until late August, some have even said the first week of September.”

As for estimate updates, Lange says there’s a chance we might be looking at a bit more volume than we previously thought …

LANGE … “We’re still right thinking right around that 22-to-22.5 million boxes, but I was looking at the data, kind of going through the numbers, and it looks like we’re kind of lining up to the 2019 crop year which came out at about 23.2 million.”

So, Lange says at this point, growers are feeling pretty good about cherry harvest, but …

LANGE … “It’s kind of in that panic mode where nobody knew there was going to be this much fruit at the beginning, but I overall the industry is handling it and I think, you know, as retail ads kind of lower a little bit, we’ll even everything out and we’ll just kind of glide through the season hopefully.”

Lange says exports should also ramp up within the next week or two as Northwest Cherries go worldwide.
