ICE and Ag Labor Pt 1

From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. Following President Trump’s orders to scale back immigration raids on farms, hotels, restaurants and meatpacking plants, many are watching closely to see what happens.

U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse says that’s good news …

NEWHOUSE … “Yeah, I was just delighted to see this post that the President put on Truth Social. This, I think, reflects some of the things that I’ve been trying to communicate to the White House for several months now.”

Newhouse says nobody’s against deporting the “real bad guys” …

NEWHOUSE … “However, we do think we have to have a different approach when it comes to farm workers, to other people that are engaged in our economy in a very important way.”

Newhouse is delighted the message has been heard …

NEWHOUSE … “These are people that are necessary to produce the food and fiber of our nation. If we have issues with their presence being here, whether legally or not, we need to address those issues. But just a flat-out deportation truly hampers the industries that are important to our country.”

This, Newhouse says brings the issues to the forefront …

NEWHOUSE … “I think it truly sheds a light on the necessity for us to do what I’ve been trying to do for several years now, and reform some of our agricultural worker rules and regulations. I truly think we have a huge opportunity to make some tremendous progress.”

Listen tomorrow for more on the President’s order to stop ICE raids on farms and other labor-dependent industries.
