Tariffs the Good and Bad Pt 1
From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson. The tariffs placed on some of our trading partners have many in the agricultural industry going back and forth on whether or not it’s a good idea.I asked U.S. Representative Dan Newhouse for his thoughts and if tariffs are an effective way of negotiating even with the potential economic impact? …
NEWHOUSE … “I think that tariffs can be a valuable tool. They can be just one of the things in our toolbox that we can use in the short term. But I agree with you wholeheartedly and I’ve been hearing from a lot of farmers that have been coming to see me, have been reaching out and letting me know their feelings about it.”
But Newhouse says when using tariffs, agriculture is often the target of retaliation …
NEWHOUSE … “We do have a history of being retaliated against when tariffs are put into place by our country, other countries typically respond. And their target, inevitably, are agricultural products.”
And, Newhouse says we’re still feeling the negative impact of tariffs from seven years ago …
NEWHOUSE … “Agriculture will not fare well in that, particularly when we have so many challenges facing the industry already. So, there’s, I can best say that there’s a recognition of their value, but also a fear or a concern that they could truly cause harm to the industry if it had gone on too long.”
Tune in tomorrow for more on the positive and negative impacts of using tariffs.
