Honesty in labeling and the farm bill – well, the Florida Farm Bill, that is. Now filed as SB 700 and H 651, legislation dubbed the “Florida Farm Bill” is continuing to see praise from Florida Commissioner of Agriculture Wilton Simpson.

In the latest, Simpson is highlighting its proposal to require honest and accurate labeling for plant-based food products. As the legislation is written, plant-based food products would be prohibited from being labeled as meat, milk, or poultry.

From Commissioner Simpson, “Words matter, and when shoppers pick up a product labeled as ‘milk’ or ‘meat,’ or ‘poultry,’ they shouldn’t have to read the fine print to find out it’s actually made from soy, almonds, or chemicals.”

From bill sponsor Senator Keith Truenow, “By making it crystal clear what is – and what is not – contained within a food product, consumers can make the most informed choices when purchasing meat, milk, poultry, or plant-based products.”

Sponsoring the legislation on the House side, Representative Kaylee Tuck. She adds that the proposal will strengthen Floridians’ confidence in the products they purchase and that, “No one should have to guess whether the ‘milk’ they’re buying actually comes from a cow.”
