What do we want? More time. When do we want it? Now!

That may sound a bit like a back-to-school cheer but, all the same, it is poultry groups with the chant as they ask for more time on changes to the salmonella framework.

The National Chicken Council is now requesting a 90-day extension to the comment period for that proposed framework from the FSIS after what they say were recent unsatisfactory public meetings and a growing series of unanswered questions.

The Council says they want more time to properly analyze the proposal and provide more meaningful comments.

“Unfortunately, the two webinars that the Food Safety and Inspection Service failed to provide meaningful insights or clarification on most of the questions asked by participants,” says Dr. Ashley Peterson, senior vice president of science and regulatory affairs for the NCC. “Most clarifying and technical questions went unanswered during the presentations.”

In sum, Peterson says there are more questions than answers at this point saying that, “The webinars showed us FSIS has limited guidance to offer the industry.”
