CA Wins Specialty Crop Block Grant Lotto
Stick a feather in the proverbial grant-getting cap here in the state of California. The USDA has announced funding for the 2024 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program, with California receiving $23.3 million of the $72.9 million awarded nationwide. The program supports state agriculture departments in enhancing the competitiveness of specialty crops, which include fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, and nursery crops."We are very pleased that the USDA continues to prioritize this critical program," said California Department of Food and Agriculture Secretary Karen Ross. "Block grant funds have provided tens of millions of dollars in support for California food production over the years, helping our farmers and ranchers continue to produce high-quality, nutritious fruits, nuts, and vegetables."
CDFA will fund 44 projects with these grants. Among the recipients, the Buy California Marketing Agreement received $2.2 million to promote California-grown specialty crops through a comprehensive digital and retail campaign. Sustainable Conservation, a nonprofit, was awarded nearly $500,000 to improve on-farm water recharge in the San Joaquin Valley.
